Paddy Scenes
Taiwan raised itself up by farming. Yet with globalization and a changing society, industry and technology have become more important to Taiwan than agriculture. The sweeping bucolic scenes I witnessed in my youth are now disappearing, as the demands of industry and technology grow. Industrial zones cannot supply enough space, and farmlands are being consumed. The fields are no longer filled with crops alone.
Using a method of restricted visual frames, the series “Paddy Scenes” gazes upon the sights currently to be found in rural Taiwan, allowing two simple elements to engage in dialogue within the images, thus musing upon the turmoil and “balance” between the two in the process of society’s development. Whether photography is able to encompass the entirety of a real-life situation has long been subject to doubt. Deliberately shrinking visual frames may be a limitation, or it may be an opportunity for creativity. I am searching for the “paddy scenes” of the contemporary world.
