Paddy Scenes
Taiwan raised itself up by farming. Yet with globalization and a changing society, industry and technology have become more important to Taiwan than agriculture. The sweeping bucolic scenes I witnessed in my youth are now disappearing, as the demands of industry and technology grow. Industrial zones cannot supply enough space, and farmlands are being consumed. The fields are no longer filled with crops alone.
Using a method of restricted visual frames, the series “Paddy Scenes” gazes upon present-day scenes of the countryside along Taiwan’s west coast. Factories with corrugated metal exteriors are a hallmark of Taiwan that form an alternative expression of the island’s beauty. As these two simple elements engage in dialogue within the images, the series muses upon the turmoil and “balance” between them in the process of society’s development. Whether photography is able to encompass the entirety of a real-life situation has long been subject to doubt. Deliberately shrinking visual frames may be a limitation, or it may be an opportunity for creativity. I am searching for the “paddy scenes” of the contemporary world.
