Being
Being

Smart phones are changing human history. For nearly a decade they have spread with unimaginable speed. They are probably the single category of product that has become universal most quickly in all of history. By the time we have come to be concerned about how they will alter human life, the levels at which they are influencing us have multiplied more quickly than we could imagine. From the broadcasting of news and images, entertainment, human relations, families, physical and mental health, education, and business management to politics, virtually nothing can be separated from phones. They are an irresistible force, and it seems there is no looking back.

Revolutionary new technologies inevitably usher in influences both positive and negative. In education, are smart phones helpful or harmful? This is a question that has puzzled me for several years. For university students in pursuit of self-actualization, is immersion in these gleaming silver screens imprisonment of the mind, or liberation? And how should we define “being” and “nothingness”?
